In this story, Jessica McCormack—a Lon- don-based New Zealand designer whose work is adored by the likes of Rosie Huntington- Whiteley to Rihanna—identifies a serious shift in engagement ring trends. “Brilliant-cut solitaire engagement rings are always going to be classic, but we’re seeing a global trend towards ethically- sourced and sustainable colored gemstones re- placing diamonds,” she says. She’s not alone. Independent bespoke designer Liv Luttrell specializes in high jewels in the engagement ring realm catering to the one-percent sector. She cites an increased awareness of materials as the main takeaway in engagement rings for the wealthy. “It’s a silent, personal statement,” Luttrell notes. “Wearing a diamond, especially a large flawless variety, may evoke the kind of wonder of seeing someone in fur. If the fur was sourced naturally, that’s as dreadful as wearing plastic. Our clients opt for emeralds.” Something Old, Something Blue... or Green “I think the concept of one traditional kind of ring is changing with our generation,” says jeweler Monique Péan, whose atelier line offers bespoke engagement and wedding rings. Designer, Pamela Love, collaborated with Péan on her own ring, agrees: “There are a lot of women who want something more unique, more personal…more colorful.” Love recently had two women drop by her studio looking to design engagement rings with her. They confessed that they returned the white diamond solitaire platinum rings their fiancés had proposed to them with. “Blue is true,” the new catch phrase of the now among Millennial’s children—those soon to be in the market for that special ring sans diamonds. Famed POPSUGAR’s fashion editor, Sarah Wasilak gave a “no” to diamonds. “My fiancé has been my best friend for a very long time, so once we fell in love, it was easy for me to share my big plans for the ring early on with him. I was set on a black pearl and deep blue sapphires for my ring. We customized a pearl elevated by a hidden halo with sapphires because he knew they reminded me of the ocean, my favorite place to be.” Fashionistas followed suit and soon Instagram was ringing with colorful engagement rings and we’re not referring to fancy color diamonds. These leading young online ladies were grinning The Natural Diamond Council recently promoted mined diamonds as “extremely rare.” It has since reduced the bold print of this untruth but it’s clear that it is standing behind an unnamed source for this un- founded claim that isn’t helping anyone. (naturaldiamonds.com ) When the Editor of British Vogue was proposed to, she made it clear she wasn’t about to play traditional solitaire. She insisted on a blue sapphire with white diamonds in a small supporting role. Other fashionistas, from edi- tors to anyone wanting colored rings, project a message that diamonds are dead, that they’re dated. Emeralds are taking command and diamonds are lucky to even touch her table these days.
