For every Chatham jewelry product sold to the consumer, Chatham vows to plant a tree in its native California state. California has faced multiple natural disasters in a short span of just five years – numerous wildfires, severe droughts, and bark beetle infestations. California represents one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world. Trees are important to clean the air we breathe, to provide natural water filtrations, and for providing a habitat to several species of insects, animals, and plants. Lastly, trees help cool the planet by absorbing and storing harmful greenhouse gases around the world. Chatham partnered with the Elephant Cooperation in 2021, a non-profit dedicated to saving the African elephant population and helping the children who live near them. The initiatives they help fund include anti-poaching efforts, human elephant conflict mitigation, elephant rescue, habitat conservation, as well as education and food support for children in these communities. Although Chatham has never mined a single diamond from African soil, we strongly believe it is time for the industry to give back to a continent that has already given so much to us. Q: Color and Chatham go hand-in-hand. What do you foresee as important retailer color jewelry and gemstone trend for the balance of 2023, and how is Chatham poised to address those trends? A: Color is expressive, personal, and daring. It continues to be the ultimate choice for self-expression. Chatham is experiencing a great demand in our lab-grown alexandrite, though the popular trio isn’t too far behind – lab-grown emerald, lab-grown sapphire, and lab-grown ruby. Chatham lab-grown alexandrite is the most searched colored gemstone on our website. It’s striking color-change from a bluish teal to a reddish purple is unique and different. This is what the current shopper is looking for – something unique. Mined alexandrite of like-quality sells for over $30K per carat. Whereas Chatham lab-grown alexandrite is more affordable to the standard consumer. Moreover, Chatham is able to cut unique shapes that would otherwise be impossible to cut using mined material. These cuts, like the onion or flame, are exclusive to our fine jewelry brand and you can’t find them anywhere else. We’ve also seen a significant spike in interest in our Chatham lab-grown emeralds. Again, similar quality material is more often found in museums or at auction. Chatham cuts away about eighty percent of the rough to deliver the finest color and purest clarity. Mined emeralds are frequently fracture filled or color treated to enhance its appearance. Chatham is grown as-is using a Colombian seed crystal to ensure the best quality growth. Another area of peeked interest is in the metal color - yellow gold. Popular color combinations include yellow paired with lab-grown ruby, lab-grown emerald and more recently, lab- grown sapphire. Yellow gold overall is high in popularity and enhances the look of the piece. Chatham is unveiling a collection of yellow gold pieces beautifully set with Chatham lab-grown sapphire at the upcoming IJO Show in Orlando. Yellow and blue are complementary colors, it is no wonder they work harmoniously together. Styles range from classic to modern, maximalist to minimalist. And, the ultimate beauty of working with Chatham is in our lifetime guarantee on each and every colored gemstone.
