Neuhaus and Warch (both 28 at the time) thought they should closely interact with their peer female diamond shoppers. They knew they were at a mature version of the “twenty-something” demographic, one that has been recognized as desiring a transparent supply chain vision, and ethical options in their diamond purchases. “There has been more and more education and people are becoming more conscious, more open-minded about new innovations and new ways of doing old things,” Warch said. “Just like diamonds mined from the ground, our lab diamonds are created from carbon in a high-pressure and high- temperature environment. Thanks to today’s technology we’re able to reproduce that environment in a lab,” Warch says. Warch studied business and finance. Neuhaus worked in the jewelry division of a small luxury shopping business and studied gemology. Together, with about $10,000 of personal savings Kimaï was launched with just a few online styles. A “seed” round from a venture capitalist firm and an investment from Diane von Furstenberg was soon to follow. Branding with a “B,” perhaps the first initial of the recipient, or an abbreviation for “besties,” either way it’s a top seller shown in two LGDs set in rose gold paired with a complimentary look from the Kimaï line.
