Breitling chief executive Georges Kern said, “In ten years’ time, lab-grown diamonds will be the norm in luxury because that’s what the next generation wants.” The next generation isn’t buying Bentley’s though. Bentley Motors, a long-standing partner of the original chronograph creator, placed plans to outfit select 2024 Bentleys with LGD studded in-dash automotive clocks on an indefinite hiatus. How low can you go? Why is Breitling keeping such a low LGD profile? While not in a Patek Philippe category, they are one of only two highly respected watch brands setting LGDs. Can you find any LGD watches on Breitling’s home page? Not one. https://www.breitling.com/us-en/ Try and search the name of their top selling LGD creation: “The Super Chronometer Automatic 38.” Good luck in finding it. For a real brain twister, type “lab-grown” (with or without the hyphen) within the Breitling site search and you’ll get “no results.” Taking a conspiracy theory stance, well-heeled watch brand decision makers are always on time when frequenting major gala events. The same that has them seated next to the heaviest of natural diamond mining executives and event sponsors. But that’s crazy talk. Just because Harper’s BAZZAR editor-in-chief of their UK division was dripping in newly gifted natural diamond designs at this year’s Cannes Film Festival – that has nothing to do with her distancing herself from the “who wore what.” Let’s call it a partial distance. Harper’s editor did detail what every celebrity accessorized themselves in… natural diamonds. “Only Natural Diamonds” as the pre- printed cards boldly disclaimed. The Super Chronometer Automatic 38 by Breitling is their lead watch retailing at $14,250 USD. The ad copy emphasis doesn’t say a word about LGDs. They do reference “red gold” though, and tout”10 bars of water resistance,” which means you could wear it in the shower. Photo: Partners Group In unveiling Chapter 2.4, the inclusion of gold PVD (a more wear resistance form of gold plating) and 68 LGDs were the main talking points of the BA111OD. Limited to only seventy pieces worldwide and retailing for under $800 USD, the conversation turns to a whisper. Photo: David Daniels and Associates While Gigi Hadid stole the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet attention, she wasn’t wearing any LGDs. According to Harper’s BAZZAR, headline-ready editorial exclusively focused on natural diamond designs, as clearly denoted in every caption. Photo: Getty Hadid wore Messika high jewelry from the brand's 'Paris est une Fête' collection, including the ‘Roaring Diamonds’ necklace and bracelet; the Illusionnistes ear clip; the Glam’Azone ring; and a vivid pink and yellow diamond heart-shaped ring. Hang in there LGDs. There’s plenty of red carpet in your future. ◊
