While margins are still high for LGDs, so is the multi-pronged competition. Regrettably, the competition isn’t exclusively between LGD growers. The mining sector, specifically the National Diamond Council (NDC) wishes to inform consumers and retailers with “Diamond Facts,” the title of their recent research. The NDC focused on past natural diamond and LGD pubic data to state claims. Centering on LGDs as the natural diamond “enemy;” is obvious. Martin Rapaport made that quite clear in his dire warning to the industry and continues to support such. The NDC takes a more sophisticated approach when educating on LGDs. The NDC’s research mythology states: “The findings of this analysis have been derived from a thorough review of a wide range of secondary research sources and the evaluation of internal research conducted on behalf of the Natural Diamond Council by globally respected third-party organizations… We welcome increased levels of disclosure across the industry for both natural and synthetic diamonds to enrich and inform future research.” “Welcoming disclosure” is a confusing statement as the NDC’s sources can be cloudy and cumbersome. There are 203 footnotes relating to the NDC sources - some date back to 2015. While the majority of reference data was published in 2022, no information from the International Grown Diamond Association (IGDA), LGD studies from MVEye or MVI Marketing are offered, yet key takeaways of the NDC report concentrate on LGD “facts.” The report http://tinyurl.com/NDC-FullReport2023 outlines the approved legal references pertaining to laboratory-grown diamonds. The NDC calls out the misuse of abbreviations, such as “lab-grown diamonds,” or describing the same as “man-made.” Why then does the word “man-made” appear five times in the same NDC report with headline status, and seven times on their own site? The NDC also uses “lab-grown diamonds” in their own online FAQs, and it’s cited twice in their report, including a 2023 IGI source. Despite the fact a 4.87 GIA-studied, gem-quality diamond was found last year at Arkansas’s Crater of Diamond State Park, a popular destination where surfaced rough diamonds are anything but rare, the NDC was compelled to illustrate how rare colorless diamonds are. Dan Scott offers these examples in this special edition of Carbon. Know your competition. Read this month’s feature story and be better informed to forge successfully into 2024.
