If you were reading these words ten years ago, we could safely state you probably didn’t have any twins in your family, and most likely didn’t know any twins personally. In a world of pairing or matching diamonds for earrings, or needing two or more diamonds to be closely aligned in carat weight, size, color, curt and clarity, we were often hard pressed to find those “twins.” That is, until the natural diamond stone got a clone. Now, we all know identical twins. Many of us see and interact with twins daily, diamond-wise. But are we missing the benefits of twin power, especially during key times of the year? As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, we are also celebrating the many diamond-focused gifting opportunities that holds hands with this romantic time each February. For those that welcome natural diamond’s identical twin, many have cited new, younger shoppers, increased customer communications, talks of “trading up” from man-made to mined, especially when looking at a couple’s upcoming milestone anniversaries, increased family earnings and wealth. This, while reminding ourselves any engagement ring sale should signal the start of a strong, trusting customer-to-store relationship, not a one-off ring at the register. But will this Valentine holiday produce the level of diamond sales the industry has grown accustomed to? If December 2022 sales are any indicator, what was once relied upon as the busiest sales month of the year just didn’t deliver as typical, previous December months have. Simply put, nothing in the diamond world may be viewed as “typical” any longer. Youthful twins of yesterday were often seen in matching clothes and hairstyles. Today’s twins seek individuality, as we all do. This is why customization remains the best-selling jewelry category for all North American /independent retailers followed by bridal. Are you welcoming natural diamond’s lab-grown twin into your united family, or are you allowing lab-grown to be a Cinderella- like stepsister? Twins or not, we know how that famous fable ends. While Cinderella is celebrated, we often forget about the broken family left in her shadow. The good news is we’re still writing this story. In our version, the diamond twin is a strong and welcomed addition to the family. A twin that could never have grown without its original counterpart.
