De Beer’s Lightbox Diamonds insisted to not include any form of diamond reports for years, but it has just adjusted that policy – be it in their 12th hour, post Anglo’s pullout of the De Beers brand. The two most established and consistently deployed grading groups for LG and natural diamonds are GIA and IGI. IGI While IGI rules the roost from a LGD report perspective, jumping in early and gaining great ground with an exclusive arrangement with Pandora. This, while IGI’s LGD reports dominate the internet and in-store sales for loose and set LGDS, including strong up-and-comers: Grown Brilliance and Clear Origin. About 88% of all lab diamonds sold globally are graded by IGI. Their LGD grading reports look similar to their natural ones -– a tri- fold vertically=folded and loaded with diamond details including a registration number to confirm it online. Now, IGI’s printed natural and lab IGI reports offer an unexpected bonus: co-branding. Now, retailers may co-brand their logos with IGI’s logo as a partnership of sorts. This is one bonus (at a slightly higher price) IGI’s newest executive, Tiffany Stevens, formerly CEO of JVC, started promoting July 17, 2024. And there’s more to come. AGS should be credited for being the first major lab offering LGD reports and calling them such. Prior to, everyone referred to these documents as “certificates.” GIA In October of 2022, GIA absorbed all of AGS proprietary assets. With the acquisition, GIA uses AGS’s light performance research in their grading reports, a celebrated science-based fancy cut grading standard. To stress a difference between GIA’s natural and LGD reports, the consumer-friendly lab reduced the details on their LGD reports, and offers those reports only in digital form while maintaining printed documents, and much more detailed grading. especially in natural and fancies. New policy That policy will change by next year. GIA has announced they will go completely digital for all diamond grading reports. They will maintain the structure of both however.
