At first glance, it’s a teardrop- shaped LGD solitaire earring. Mined diamonds scored an 8.8; LGDs were rated 1.2. Clearly they have a much lower impact. It takes a huge amount of energy to produce man- made stones, and a lot of energy means burning more fossil fuels. There’s no burrowing into the planet but most LDG producers are paying massive electric bills for reaching temperatures of 1099.85 o C or 2011.73 o F during the CVD process as described in Science Direct Magazine in 2020. But those numbers don’t align with the TruCost study (part of S&P Global) commissioned in 2019 by the DPA (now NDC) especially when we look at CO 2 emissions. TruCost’s report states, “mining a 1-carat natural diamond results in 160 kilograms of CO 2 emissions, while an LGD of the same size results in 511 kilograms.” The estimates seem vaguely calculated at best citing sources from LGD-brand websites, press releases, and personal communication with unnamed LGD producers. What LGD websites provide this data and what press releases included it? Plus-sized model Ashley Graham is a perfect fit for Pandora Brilliance ads. The Data Is in Question There is tremendous variation in energy usage among mines, depending on where they are located. The Argyle mine in Western Australia, has a fuel usage of 4.2 pounds per carat, whereas the Diavik mine in Canada burns fuel at the rate of 11.5 pounds per carat. On the LGD side, the tabulations should be spot-on given the highly controlled environment. Yet, no one seems to be taking the initial material creation and processes into consideration. In other words, we can’t start the clock when someone is ready to press start in the lab. Just as mining operations must consider fuel for trucking and degradation to roads and surrounding land around a mining site, so must growers factor in fundamental pre- and post-energy consumption. As LGD competition grows and more brands emerge, prices—and margins—will continue to fall. This places early adopters with a product that is out-priced, while the value >>
